Adam Shefter had a chance to visit with Tennessee Titans GM Ricky, and here's how the organization is viewing and responding to last years league title:
2021 State of the Franchise:
It was only a couple years ago our franchise had the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck then AB went full AB on us. The franchise was looking at a multi year rebuild after losing our two best players in the same off-season. We fought on fully believing in our ability to still put together a competitive roster to become champions.
Well well here we are 2020 Super Bowl Champions. As excited and proud of the hard work put into becoming Super Bowl Champions. We don't feel as a franchise we've received or earned the respect that comes with a Super Bowl Champion. We have heard the word "lucky" thrown around because our opponent was less than full strength. Or that we had an easy path being in the AFC. Or we didn't play a 1st place schedule. Our franchise was never ranked any higher than 5th in power rankings. Even though our two losses all year came with a total point difference of .72pts. One of those losses came with a Wednesday scoring adjustment to boot. So we feel the doubts about the franchise ability to be a real competitor in this league from our front office to our players has long been there.
That brings us to our 2021 mission statement. The Titans are here to prove 2020 was no fluke. Sure we could have ran it back with the same roster but that's easy. Like every franchise we are here to challenge ourselves to be the best front office and team around. We know it isn't going to be easy and we will have a bulls eye on our back. We welcome all who want to challenge for our crown. And to them we say best of luck.
We are proud to be apart of something as special as our 2020 run was. Having said that we are here to build a dynasty and win multiple championships. We aren't going to rely on our 2020 season to define our franchise. This is just the beginning. I couldn't be more excited to be apart of it. We look forward for what the 2021 season and the future will bring for our franchise.
GM Ricky
Looks like the defending champs are playing the no respect underdog card in 2021, it should make for an interesting title defense.
