Proposal #2 Means Tested Draft Positioning
This is sure to be controversial as it is a radical proposal but I wanted to present it to the group. The purpose of this proposal would be to disincentivise teams from tanking and/or stripping their rosters down to the chassis after being eliminated from the playoffs. I believe the benefits of this rule help with activity levels on weaker rosters, while still keeping the highest draft picks concentrated on the weakest rosters. This proposal is based on the way some 30-team Proboards baseball leagues handle their rookie draft pick.
1. Instead of draft order being determined simply by weakest record getting highest pick, a points system would determine draft order.
2. As soon as a team is eliminated from the playoffs their weekly points totals would be tracked via Proboards and added together at the end of the Legacy regular season. Draft order would then be determined by awarding the team with the MOST points the #1 overall pick, 2nd most with #2 and so on through Pick #20.
HYPOTHETICAL EXAMPLE:
Packers: 12-1
Bears: 8-5
Vikings: 7-6
Lions 3-10
4 Team Example:
Lions - Team is eliminated week 7. They keep fighting, keep setting their lineups and adding free agents leading to some competitive performance late in the season
Week 8: 150pts
Weel 9: 170pts
Week 10: 150pts
Week 11: 200pts
Week 12: 150pts
Week 13: 150pts
TOTAL POINTS: 970 Points after elimination, likely enough for a very high draft pick
Bears - Team is eliminated week 10 after GM decided to strip roster down and sell all productive players for draft picks in week 6 after determining a deep playoff run was unlikely.
Week 11: 150 pts
Week 12: 80 pts
Week 13: 100 pts
TOTAL POINTS: 430 after elimination Likely good for a pick in the 15 overall range
Vikings - After an 0-4 first month, the team begins putting up better weekly numbers as the GM tries to improve their roster. eliminated week 9 because of the poor start.
Week 10: 150 pts
Week 11: 200 pts
Week 12: 175 pts
Week 13: 225 pts
Points Total: 750 after elimination, a possible top 10 pick despite a possible record over .500
Packers - Excellent record has Packers sewing the division up by week 10, their pick will still be determined by playoff performance.
This is no doubt a complicated proposal and, as previously stated, quite radical and different from the real life NFL. That said, eliminated NFL teams who are well cached DO try to win games late in the season in the NFL despite playoff elimination. This would better emulate that desire for success while also ensuring the league stays competitive as the season winds down instead of the best teams becoming super teams and the bottom 15 fighting each other to trade their star wide receivers to the highest bidder.
