I propose allowing contract extensions right through the off season, in a lot of cases GM's don't have a fully formed plan for the season and the allows for GM's who are in rebuild to trade for players after the draft once they've seen the direction they're going. We only get one I just don't see why we should be forced to use it or lose it when we're unsure of how our roster will pan out later...

The idea to have a contracts option period has been to give structure, purpose and practicality to the offseason.
In the case of Kittle, im not sure as to the reasons why a player of his status was not extended, could have been oversight, or possibly there not being an extra extension available. I dont know.
But that is precisely the point of having a contact's option period, the first of which is GM responsibility to act within a certain structured framework that forces difficult decisions. The same kind of decisions that are often times required by GM's in the NFL, as is the case in these leagues players do not have official representation, thus an owners-based league gives all the advantage to ownership putting a player like Kittle at the mercy of whenever a GM gets around to it. A player like Kittle would have been demanding that an organization deal with his financial matters long before we were to get to the eve of kickoff on the final year of his contract. The idea is that we force GM's to think ahead, and decide who is worthy of an extension, and hold him accountable if a bad decision is made by that GM, or if a GM has become complacent, or if that GM distributed his extension to another player.
The scenarios play out different when real life circumstances are trying to be mimicked, and decisions that have happened 5 moths before a season starts or 2 weeks before a season starts is a night and day scenario. We are trying to do our best not only to make this fantasy game just as real as the NFL GM job, but to make managing a team in this league as challenging as possible, and to test GM endurance both during the season, but as well as the offseason.
