I was going through the defensive scoring from last season, and in regard to total points, we had 27 defensive players finish in the top 100. Now this is a very good improvement from the early years in Legacy where we had maybe 12-15 players initially finishing in that top 100.
Looking across the defensive landscape, DE's and LB's seem to be in good shape in comparison to their offensive counterparts, as with the exception of a few offensive stars in the NFL, those positions are doing fine, and make up the majority of the 27 defensive players that break the top 100. With the exception of Aaron Donald and Cameron Hayward, all defensive players that finished in the top 100 were either DE's or LB's, with again the exception of two DT's. We purposely set out a year or two ago to make vast improvement to the DT position by doubling the points for DT's and it shows across the board, though in general you don't have too many DT's that make impacts in scoring with the exception of the few that play 3 downs in the NFL. I think that is simply the nature of the position, and any further changes in trying to iimprove the DT position may make the exceptions to the rule players like Donald and Hayward overly powerful in these leagues.
Conclusion, for now, I think DE's, DT's and LB's are good in regard to scoring and how they balance out with their offensive counter parts.
However, Saftey and Cornerback positions are coming in slightly low. Neither position finished in the top 100, and in general the position had a pretty good drop off when comparing to LB's.
We set out to raise these positions last year, as we made a number of categorical changes to scoring to improve these positions, and we can see that as in both the S and CB position scoring came up rather modestly one year to the next. In 2019 we had 17 CB's that broke 10ppg or more, compared to 21 in 2021. We also had 32 Safety's in 2019 that broke 10ppg or more versus 36 in 2021. As you can see the rule changes we made over the past couple years have closed that gap with defensive backs, but in general they still are behind in comparison to LB's and DE's.
My recommendation would be to consider another round of small increases to scoring that would primarily affect the defensive backs. I would caution small incremental changes because it respects a GM's vision on how they have built their teams under current rules, and also some of the changes that affect DB's will also affect other defensive positions ever so slightly and we don't want an over balance the other way.
Now I got a headache writing this post, so ill keep it shorter as I have other thoughts that ill address later. LOL.
