This would only be a slight change, but there have been proposals around changing some rookie contract methodology. This proposition would add extra value to 2nd round picks, making them the only way to have a player under contract for 4 years with an RFA option at the end of the deal.
The following schedule would then apply:
1st Round: 5 Years, UFA 2nd Round: 4 years, RFA 3rd-5th: 3 years, RFA
This rule would take effect immediately and would be in effect for the 2023 draft.

Would there be any chance that a player with 4 years going into RFA could cause some problems, either admin wise or competitively) given a player signed in UFA would only be eligible for RFA if they have 3 years experience or less?
It also means that RFA in 3 years time will be sparce, and every year after that would be a hodge-podge mix of 2nd rounders from one class and 3rd-5th rounders of a different draft class. I much prefer allowing the 2nd round to be the option of 5yrs or 3yr RFA over a 4yr RFA midground.

That was definitely my alteration. I don’t think a 4 year UFA deal is a good enough contract for a 2nd round pick. This proposal is an effort to give 2nd round picks a uniquely valuable position in the league.

No from me, 4 years with RFA is too much

Dan brought up a good point, how does this affect signing UFA to a 3 year + RFA contract? It creates an inconsistency. I don’t agree with that. We should either make it a 4 year deal then UFA or leave it at 3 years + RFA. I would support a change to 4 year deal for 2nd round picks but no RFA

with a split 50-50 margin and 20 votes, this proposition has not passed. We may revisit the concept next offseason.
