After two years of feedback, I am proposing this simple solution to our bye week issue.
The past two years, teams (and trade negotiations) have been severely altered by these wildcard round bye weeks. To address this:
1. Allow, before kickoff in EITHER week 12 or 13 (depending on how this vote goes), teams to decide to designate a player with a week 14 bye as ineligible for playing in their matchup that week, and that players stats would instead apply to week 14.
2. In week 12 or 13, the player would be left on the team's bench as if that week was their bye week.
3. During week 14, that player MUST be placed into the lineup with their week 12 or 13 points applied.
-Justin Herbert (Wk 14 bye) designated a week 14 replacement.
-Chargers can use any other eligible QB they have on roster for week 12 or 13 -Justin Herbert scores 11 points that week -During the Chargers week 14 bye, Justin Herbert is placed into the lineup and 11 points are added to their score. This is a locked result, and the team can not "bench" Herbert for another player after declaring them eligible for week 14.
The debate on the previous thread was weather week 12 or 13 should be designated as this "replacement" week. Feel free to offer cmmentary below, but I see them as such:
Week 12: Pro - Thanksgiving week there are no NFL bye weeks, this would allow the least possible negative effect for owners with Week 14 byes Pro - This choice would prevent these byes from affecting the important Week 13 divisional matchup Con - Two weeks before Week 14 might be an awkward time to make this decision in terms of seeding
Week 13 Pro - There were only two NFL teams with week 13 byes in 2022, so still a relatively soft landing for owners declaring players in week 13 Pro - This is a full rule cutout to allow players with Week 14 byes to "play" in playoff games. Affecting the important week 13 matchup seems like a fair price for that luxury Con - Obviously, would add more byes to a week 13 divisional matchup that is often played for divisional crowns and playoff bids.
This rule change would take effect during the 2023 season.
Edit: as a clarification, “Neither” in this situation will equal “keep the schedule as is. This would mean teams with week 14 byes would be responsible for finding replacements or otherwise planning ahead of time knowing they would be without their bye players on week 14.

Personally I voted neither. I'd much rather see a flex option than try and figure out the whole designate this and that. OR move the playoffs back a week. The cons to sitting a player while in the midst of a playoff race seem more harmful than taking a risk that a player may be sitting in the SB. I may be biased as it seems like I have to scrape and fight every week to just make the playoffs, losing one game to sit a guy for the next week might be the difference between me being in or out.

This gives you the opportunity to play all your players in week 12 or 13 but if you do make the playoffs then you'd potentially have a disadvantage in that week 14 playoff matchup.

I voted neither. I think a flex option is best. Each owner has almost 8 months to prepare for a week 14 bye. The teams that couldn’t make the proper change, unlucky with a QB, or snuck into the playoffs still have a flex fallback.
The biggest reason why I’m against a declaration is that player to be declared could be playing a piss poor team and now they carry that advantage into the playoffs.

I voted neither
I do not see why we would help a team in week 14 with byes, when they’ve had all offseason and season to plan for, but then not help a team a team who has bye trouble in week 11 or 13. For some teams a week 13 matchup vs. a division rival, where they need to win that game to make the playoffs…is exactly that a playoff game. Why would we help a week 14 team…but not that week 13 team?
I propose that we either, Do not help out any team in any week…Trade/UFA pick ups whatever to get through a week 14 bye
OR
Give each team ONE week of their choosing, where they can use Week 12 as a substitute for bye players. Exactly how it would work for the proposal we are voting on for week 14…we would apply those same rules to ONE week of a teams choosing. So now if a team needs that assistance in week 10…they got it…or week 13…they got it. Instead of just helping that week 14 team.
Again, I am not sold on which of those above two I support, but I definitely don’t want to bail out a week 14 team…and no one else during the season.

I’m against this proposal.
My basic question is, why do we have to accommodate for a week 14 bye? We don’t for any other weeks. We have seen multiple teams make deep playoff runs with no QB. I definitely think it’s possible to win a week 14 game with a 0 from a player. If there is concerns regarding players with a week 14 bye, then teams have the whole season to trade or sign UFA’s to cover for those bye weeks. I just think this is an unnecessary proposal and makes complications where they don’t need to be. Anyway, I’m in the minority, I know, but I wanted to put my thoughts down.

I was one who voted FOR the proposal. This is coming from one who suffered a 1st round playoff loss the first year another regular season game was added to the schedule.
Both the Colts & Philly had a bye during the wildcard round...I believe I had 4-5 key players out as a result.
The bottom line, is that regular season byes and byes during the playoffs are two different things entirely. Two separate seasons really. Those who are fortunate enough to make the playoffs should be given a fair opportunity to compete.
There can be no unfair competitive advantage to a team that fails to make the playoffs.

Bye weeks don’t “sneak” up on us, why is it so unfair to plan ahead to cover the bye week? Sign a UFA, activate a practice squad guy, make a trade. Lots of options to not take a 0. Should be part of the strategy. I understand QB is difficult, but if you have any other positions on bye it should be relatively easy to get one that would score more than a 0. Then you’re not giving up any assets and you still get a couple points. As for QB, it’s difficult but we have seen many teams advance with no QB. It can be done if the rest of your team is scoring. No doubt these week 14 byes are difficult but I just think there’s too many options to deal with it to have to make a rule like this.

After debate and consideration, these appear to be the two Options for dealing with this.. a week 12 declared bye week fill in who’s points would apply to a potential week 14 game, or we just let t ride with no alternative structure, leaving the option of how to deal with this quirk to the individual. If no option passes 16 votes we will go with the highest scoring option.

Absolutely, and to be honest in a 32 team league I don't see it being easy to "accomodate a week 14 bye" which I assume means trading away a stud QB just before the trade deadline to trade for a lesser one who plays the playoff round bye week... Or trading a high pick (1st) to get one game out of a starting QB

I guess what I don't understand is if the playoffs byes are that important were a new rule is being made for them. Why aren't GM's covering themselves for those situations when you have the whole year to do so beforehand? Why wait til week 14 for something to be done that could help your team? You know what players are going to be on your week 14 bye before it happens. It's generally not going to be a shock moment that said player won't be available for week 14.
You don't have to use a high premium pick on a quarterback for a bye. You can get a stop gap option. There are lower level quarterbacks available who can fit that mold (Marriotta, Dalton, Brissett, Minshew) just to name a few. There are always injuries as well that could open playing time for other quarterbacks as the season unfolds. And we've seen GM's win without quarterbacks here.
To me this feels like creating a problem to have a rule for. Right now we are all at the same handicap of a week 14 byes. Once the season starts and your schedule is known then the strategy comes into play. Do you have to make adjustments or do you think your team is good enough to avoid those week 14 byes? From there you have the rest of the season to either think your team is going to compete to make moves for that week 14 bye or you slide out of the race and it's not a worry.
This rule option to me feels like an easy cop out to something that can be strategized year in and year out and is part of the game of bye weeks that everyone deals with no matter what week of the season it is.

I know last year I had 2 qbs, and both had week 14 byes. I think the large number of bye week teams makes it hard for 26 potential contenders to plan it out.
I'm not for or against the rule change. But I attempted to plan for it last year, there was just too much talent that I had secured on my roster on cheap contracts that made it hard to accommodate in a salary based league
