First let me just commend the league commissioner for putting together a league of this magnitude, I have ran a few leagues over the course of my time, and the simple size and depth of what we're doing here is no small feat. I think we should all stop and recognize the amount of effort being put into this gathering of football fanatics and how the BILLS GM is sacrificing no small amount of time entirely for our own pleasure. And with that in mind I would personally like to say thank you to the commish.
I think one of the things that has happened has been that some of the enthusiasm of the league has naturally toned down just a bit from the time we started because of the sheer size and time that it's taking to complete this initial draft. And in many ways, it's very understandable. But there are a couple issue that I'm seeing that may be a bit of a hang up. First let me say that I have been a big proponent of not raising the salary cap, while at the same time voting in favor of increasing the veteran draft from 20 rounds up to 25 rounds. I believe that money management is the most critical aspect of salary leagues, and thus everyone should be held accountable for how they spend their money. But while many big name players have been taken off the board with very big salaries, there are many big name salary players that remain on the board. And, with a 25 round draft, they may just stay there for a while until free agency comes around. Which they should. I 'm just wondering at this point if 25 rounds is too many. I think as we get to the lower parts of this draft, many GM's are going to be forced to draw from the bottom of the well for the mere purpose of not taking on one of these gigantic salaries as cap space starts to become limited. I guess one of the ways we could solve that problem would be to raise the cap number for each team, but I think that would be tremendously unfair to all those that based their picks off a 100M cap. Maybe the best thing to do is eliminate some rounds in the veteran draft, but if trades have already been made in the deeper parts of the draft, then this could be potentially unfair to those that have traded back.
In the end, there may not be any easy answer and everything may work out just fine. But I just wanted to get some thoughts out as to what I'm seeing and to get other people's opinions as we move forward.
Thanks
Frank
