I just wanted to drop a note stating my position on compensatory picks. I believe in the principle that fantasy leagues must always strive for fairness and balance, there's nothing more difficult to deal with when owners lose interest in leagues and abandon their organizations to incur damage that can be crippling for years to come. And, while there is no easy fix to this problem, one of my ways to deal with it is to give compensatory picks to help organizations that have been brought down to its knees by owners who bail. Compensatory picks only happen in one way, and that is when the league takes temporal charge of an organization in order to find new management for that organization. No current owner will be given comp picks because they have made bad decisions, only when an owner is booted from the league, and new ownership is being sought will comp picks be assigned to any team in this league as a way to help with the failure of previous management.
I know some have suggested that giving new owners a free contract drop as a way to help potential new owners. And, while I have been in leagues that have done that, I prefer the comp method because drafting is a skill, and free drops are more of a gift. While I'm not opposed to the idea of free drops, and it's something that at some point we may entertain as a league, I think the comp method is a very reasonable way of dealing with some of these tough ownership issues. Also, as we do our best to mimic the NFL, any potential new GM has to take over what was left behind from the previous regime, and I don't want to take away that aspect of the game as it makes managing a team so much more interesting.
Also, I like limiting comp picks from the 2nd round through the 5th round. I'm not a fan of giving out 1st round comps.
Let me know what you guys think of the comp pick philosophy.
