If you remember last year, we made some changes to the scoring system as there were some concerns that some positions were overvalued based on the current scoring system.
Here is the discussion we had: legacynfl.boards.net/thread/2218/discussion-scoring-system-changes
Here is the vote and the actual changes we made: legacynfl.boards.net/thread/2245/2015-proposition-2-approved-4
Looking ahead to the 2016 season, and as I go through the numbers, the WR position is still too highly valued. And, as I have said in past years, it comes down to that points per reception rule that apart from the QB position, skews the WR position over every other position in this league. Last year we dropped that PPR from 1.75, down to 1.25, while at the same time dropping QB TD passes from 6 points down to 5 Points. We also made some subtle changes to increase defensive points, to close the gap between the defensive positions, and the offensive positions.
I believe the defensive scoring is about right. But, I would like more parity between the WR position, and the RB position. One league that I am in, actually gives a small point bonus for carries, which helps out the RB position. Now, if we're going to give a WR points for catch, why not give an RB credit for a carry. Look at this scenario, a WR makes a screen pass catch for a loss of 2 yards, and he still gets credit for 1.05 points for that play. A RB be gets a carry and runs ahead for a 2 yard gain, and gets a net 0.2 points for that play. I've seen to many plays this year from players like Golden Tate who catches 4 or 5 screen passes a game for minimal yards, and still get 10 to 12 points just for those plays without actually accounting for much on the field.
Looking over some of the numbers on MFL, we have 23 WR's this year that have scored over 200 points versus only 5 RB's who have broken 200 points on the year. We have 5 WR's that have broken over 300 points on the year, but zero RB's. I think we need to close the gap a bit on WR's, while still not trying to make the RB position too strong in comparison to all other positions. And, keep this in mind, the few RB's that did break the 200 points barrier so far did so because many of them were pass catchers, which shows the disparity between the running game and the passing game in this league.
So here's my proposal. We drop reception from 1.25 down to 1 point. We give RB's a credit of .15 per carry (roughly 1 point for every 8 carries.) This will bring the WR position down a bit, and make it more balanced with all other positions, including defense, and it will bring the RB position a little closer to par with WR, without making it too strong.
Thoughts?
