Good afternoon gentlemen, we are going to open the league voting proposals for voting soon. Before that point I wanted to address a few rules that I am going to either leave off voting or adopt without a round of voting. Consider these "health of the league" decisions meant to support the mission of making running these teams challenging but not overly complicated. If the league feels strongly enough we can always look at these again in the future.
#1
1. Salary adjustments to account for the rising cap. While I respect the mindset that the cap raising 5% means all other contract options (RFA/FT/EXT) should also rise 5% a year, I prefer the flat rate adjustable approach. It is also true that current extension contracts especially do not represent the value of the players they are used on. To counter that, beginning in the 2024 offseason (next offseason) the following rates will change for position extensions. This is based off Dan's proposal with a few alterations. The general idea is "expensive, but worth it for a star player" while also considering some of the peculiarities of the positions (Short RB risk and shelf life vs TE long shelf life, but also the PPG difference coming out in the wash, both would be 8M extensions now)
CURRENTLY
Contract option A: 150% or 12M for this positions (QB)
Contract option B: 150% or 7M for these positions (RB,WR)
Contract option C: 150% or 5M for these positions (TE,LB)
Contract option D: 150% or 4M for these positions (DE,K,S)
Contract option E: 150% or 3M for this positions (DT)
Contract option F: 150% or 2.5M for this position (CB)
PROPOSAL
Contract option A: 150% or 15M for this positions (QB)
Contract option B: 150% or 10M for these positions (WR)
Contract option C: 150% or 8M for these positions (RB,TE,LB)
Contract option D: 150% or 7M for these positions (DE)
Contract option E: 150% or 5M for this position (S)
Contract option F: 150% or 4M for these positions (DT)
Contract option G: 150% or 3M for this position (CB,K)
#2 - Contract Extensions/Franchise Tag
I understand the passion on this topic. Nobody wants to see their hotshot 27 year old WR go to FA. Plenty of proposals have been submitted around adding a 2nd contract extension or possible increasing the contract option from up to 3 years to up to 4 years. The passion is understood and the opinions are constructive, but I don't believe it's in the good of the league to do this. Managing a team of elite players should be difficult, and locking up 6 star players in 3 years just depletes the FA market too much and creates an environment where it's difficult to genuinely build a championship roster because all the top players are forever locked onto the elite rosters. If you want them for 3 more years, you can pay the market rate. The extension is a serious weapon to build and keep a championship roster on a good contract, there is no need to further expand that power. There will be a rule proposal that allows an expensive but useable loophole to this concept.
