New IR Rule Proposition

Injured Reserve Players include players on NFL Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)  or Injured Reserve (IR). 

"Players  placed on IR  (optional) will not count toward the 53-player active roster limit, but will  still count toward the salary cap.  If a GM chooses to place players on IR, however, they cannot be taken off  IR all season*.  GM's may also choose to keep IR players on their active roster all season, which means they will be immediately eligible to be inserted into the starting line-up upon their [anticipated] return.

"YOU MAY NOT TRADE PLAYERS ON THE I.R" and each off-season the Players must be moved back to the active roster.

* Each team will be allowed to reactivate one player from the injured reserve after 6 weeks.

The above rewrite is mostly a matter of rearranging the wording and simplifying the concept.  I  believe this rule allows the GM enough flexibility in managing their roster without imposing unnecessary restrictions.  Of course with its implementation, a process of documentation would also have to be created in order for the league to keep track of  what players are placed on IR, as well as the time frame they were placed/activated.

 This is simply just a rewrite of the proposed rule...However, I believe I understand your position, but respectively disagree that  1) there is no upside; 2) roster space is not a valuable commodity; and 3) that's not how the NFL works.

My disagreement however, is mostly because there are always two-sides of the looking glass (so to speak).  For example, you are seeing things from a point of view that the "many" outweighs the "few". But  what of those teams who have chosen to fill their rosters to the maximum limit? Or those who may or will approach the maximum limit this upcoming year, or perhaps in the future?  In this respect I am against favoring "many teams being no where close to the limit" over those who have chosen to take advantage of the current roster limit.  

Therefore to the few who have chose and/or will choose- space is very much a valuable commodity and offers upside in the form of holding onto players, rather than surrendering them to FA. Further, this is pretty much the way the NFL works.  Especially in regards to freeing up an opening so that they can fill another position of need. Teams that have an excess of RB's will place one on injured reserve to fill a depth position at CB - as an example.

So while understanding your position of wanting to come up with a proposal that encourages the use of IR, I don't see why such proposal  has to diminish the value it already provides.

What is the NFL rule?

Any injury lasting for six or,more weeks, qualifies for IR.

So the question in this regard, is, is the proposed language acceptable in terms of gaining a clear understanding of the updated rule?

Any proposal made to encourage the use of IR is a different subject altogether...I'm not against that at all.

Suspensions are totally seperated from
IR. Suspended players get out on another list, just for suspended players.
