2019
1.1 Miami selects Kyler Murray, QB, ARI - ? - I won't grade myself it's just wrong but I gave up two top players to grab Murray despite having Mayfield on roster because I believe he's the best player in the draft by a distance...I had other needs but I think in 19 rookie drafts, if you can, you get Murray and don't sweat the other stuff
1.2 - Houston takes Josh Jacobs, RB, OAK - B+ - I get it he got drafted high by Oakland to start but there's a lot of red flags here for me. Sabin preferred Harris, his pro day metrics were worse than most, his college record is patchy at best. What was it only 2 games rushing 100 yards in college? Pluses? He can block and has a lot of tread left on the tyres. He could be the next All Day and as a Raider fan I'm hoping so but really nothing to hang your hat on he's good, other than the odd bit of tape
1.3 - Ravens take Daniel Jones, QB, NYG - C- - I wonder if Ravens had Murray here and confident that's who they'd auto draft? Neither Miami or Houston needed a QB so very probable it would have gone that way. What I don't get is how Jones is going so high. I'd say a good chance he sits this season, Manning is still the best QB on roster and will need to get injured I would have thought and if you hold that as a truism then this is Mason Rudolph going 3 last season..except Rudolph is the better QB. Plus some very good QB in the draft next couple of seasons...Very poor pick from the Giants imo in RL and a bit of a head scratcher here
1.4 - Tampa grabs N'Keal Harry, WR, NEP - A - One of the top 3 talents in the draft is taken here, love the upside and I'd have taken Harry plus a couple of others over the so called top 3 RB in the draft. The issue is how long he gets with Tom and Bill and if he can settle into the team well, we all know a lot of receivers never get the NE system.
1.5 - Buffalo takes Miles Sanders, RB, PHI - B - Sanders put up decent metrics but he's the opposite of Jacobs as the tape reveals issues, especially that he runs a little too cautiously as if anticipating contact. He'll need to grow out of that. I think Howard is the better back still plus there are other talented backs on roster. Could be a day one 3 down starter you'd want to get at 1.5 but it feels like a bit of a mess now in Philly
1.6 Dolphins select Dwayne Haskins, QB, WAS - A+ - Nice, and I had a little chuckle to myself, trade down 5 places, get another high pick and still get the QB I think the Fins QB would have taken at 1.1. I think Haskins has potential, should get the starting gig fairly early and hopefully give Miami a solid if not spectacular QB for years...nicely done and I thought this would fall this way
1.7 Rams select David Montgomery, RB, CHI - B - I'm not a big Montgomery fan, may have landed well but I think Davis has a lot of talent and there's Cohen going to see a lot of the field when Chicago are playing from behind...There are better backs still to be taken in this draft.
1.8 Niners grab Parris Campbell, WR, IND - A+ - My WR 1 in this draft if you combine landing spot and talent. He get's one of the leagues best passers and only really TY Hilton for target competition ..Cracking get at 8 and would have been my target at every pick from 2 down
1.9 - Dolphins take DK Metcalf, WR, SEA - A- - High ceiling low floor WR, could be the next Mike Evans, could just as easily be the next Treadwell.. Seattle are run first pass second and have a few decent WR on roster who could make it difficult for DK going forward. Carroll won't let draft position influence him either starting a UDFA over a high drafted RB last season. But he's good value here considering I've seen him go twice in the top 3
1.10 - Panthers select Devin White, LB, TBB - B - Polarising talent is White, I think he's the second best inside backer in the draft at best and all the assisted tackles worry me a little. Some also question his instincts but there's a lot for Tampa to work with here and improve
1.11 - Buccs get AJ Brown, WR, TEN - B+ - No issue with the talent but there's an issue with the Quarterbacking, Mariota is too inconsistent and a constant injury worry to be comfortable with any TEN receiver (And they have 3 good ones now) It doesn't get a lot better if Tannehill takes over. Maybe need 20 and beyond before Brown starts producing
1.12 - Washington takes Devin Bush, LB, PIT - A+ - Bush for me is the premier defender in this draft for me, there's a couple of nice backers better value later but if you want to take an impact backer high this is your guy. PIT traded up for him and with good reason, plus they usually draft well.
1.13 - Seahawks select TJ Hockenson, TE, DET - B - There are better blockers in this draft for me and there is probably one better move TE. Watching him against Penn State last season makes me doubt him slightly and he had other poor games. Decent blocker, OK move TE has some upside and will be an OK NFL TE but for me there are two higher ceiling guys so hence the B.
1.14 - Jaguars grab Darrell Henderson, RB, LAR - A+ - Pound for pound the best RB in the draft and he rising into a top ten pick in a lot of drafts. I'd probably take him at 7 if I had a need. I would have run to the podium to take him at 15. There's an issue with Gurley and Henderson is very good...Could get interesting real quick
1.15 - The Pack take - Nick Bosa, DE, SFO - A+, Some long term injury concerns probably saw Bosa fall here a bit. As a 10-15 seasonal sack guy he probably should have been the first D off the board, but he has been dropping of late. Should easily be the most productive of this years true Ends and will almost certainly never get a backer designation which is a bit of a problem for the likes of Sweat and Burns
1.16: Saints select Mecole Hardman, WR, KCC - B-, - The issue with Mecole is he's a poor man's Tyreek Hill and it, at time of writing, looks like Tyreek may get away with a small slap on the wrist suspension. One can't help wondering if the Chiefs panicked a bit and grabbed/reached for the nearest thing they could find too a Tyreek clone. He's athletic certainly but the technique is lacking at the moment, could easily be a gadget type player at the next level. Mecole's value was in a Tyreek replacement if they had to waive him. Outside of that he'd have tumbled in the draft both RL and fantasy.
1.17 - Denver gets - Andy Isabella, WR, ARI - ? - I had a couple in mind here but it was always going to be receiver. I pair the dynamic Isabella and pre draft sleeper with his QB in Arizona's Air Raid offence, Isabella was the number three WR on my board once the draft had finished so very happy to grab him here
1.18 - Chargers select Noah Fant, TE, DEN - A+, - Can't argue the talent here a should be top 5 draft pick and this seasons OJ Howard/Dallas Goedart (Who would have gone much higher last year had he landed almost anywhere else) A much better blocker than most would suggest and easily the best and most dynamic move TE in this draft. Shame he went to a DR. Only fly inthe ointment is he gets Flacco and then Drew Lock probably this season at some point. Flacco looks like a bridge QB to me and Lock is probably not along term answer to Denvers QB woes.
1.19 - Cowboys grab Deebo Samuel, WR , SFO, A,- Can't argue with the value here, should be the Niners top slot guy straight out of the gates and that should mean a lot of catches..But the Niners do have a lot of receivers of about the same quality and most could play slot..ADDENDUM: Looks like he's going to start and man the outside opposite Pettis.
1.20 - Falcons select Marquis Brown, WR, BAL, B+ - First receiver drafted back in April but I think he got over drafted. Small WR who may take a lot of punishment in the slot and I'm not sure he's built for that. Would certainly make a good field stretcher on the boundary too. I thought John Ross when I first saw him and that could be a similar career path.
1.21 - Eagles grab Montez Sweat, LB?, WAS, B+, This is an A+ all day long if Sweat at some point garners the DE designation. Love the talent, probably a better 4-3 end than Nick Bosa but he could struggle as a 3-4 backer. Need to play with his hand in the dirt for me. I think WAS are going 3-4 or are 3-4 and that's not a clever thing to do if you've drafted a beast like Sweat. Side note ..About time fantasy included an EDGE position to account for this.
1.22 - Vikings select Germaine Pratt, LB, CIN, C+, I think this is around a round too early for Pratt. I had to drop a long way down my board to see what my grade was and that I had a fantasy 32 team £rd round grade on him..Goodish measurables, decent college output but a lot of assisted tackles and there for me is about 5/6 better backers in the draft at this point. Looks like a strong side backer at the next level, but if he plays inside and starts in short order this would still be a bit of a reach. CIN took Malik Jefferson at about the same point last season and I think he's a superior talent, and 18 rookie Hardy Nickerson looked good playing inside backer whenever he got the chance last season
1.23 - Patriots select JJ Arcega Whiteside, WR, PHI - B, - JJAW is a tough one to evaluate, makes a lot of circus catches but has to because he finds it difficult to release. Not sure he gets away with that at the next level and will probably go missing when defended well. High bust prospect for me but with a decent ceiling if he overcomes his shortcomings.
1.24 - Dolphins take Jonathon Abram, S, OAK, A-, Think he'll start for the Raiders and should rack up the tackles. Probably the best fantasy safety in the draft and right around where he normally goes
1.25 - Pittsburgh takes Hakeem Butler , WR, ARI - B+, - Certainly one of the very best WR in the draft but that landing spot is inconclusive as to useage, maybe a 2020 story if Fitz retires..Arizona have some really good receivers on their books
1.26 - Washington takes Diontae Johnson, WR, PIT - A, - Pitsburgh caught me out taking Johnson this high, I hadn't really bothered scouting him and when a I did a quick recky I didn't see much that alluded to a second round "the next Antonio Brown" receiver. Decent I thought but nothing special. Then someone pointed out to me the footwork, DJ has elite footwork, he's a good route runner with good metrics but he'll leave coverage for dead with outstanding moves and footwork. He could, for me, easily be the next Antonio Brown. Pittsburgh are also very good at drafting receivers and Big Ben will be there for a while yet.
1.27 - Steelers grab Damien Harris, RB, NEP, A-, - Very good value here, Nick Sabin clearly thought him a better RB than our 1.2 and he certainly out-performed him in college. My #3 RB in the draft and it gets more interesting when you realise there maybe an issue with Sony Michel' fitness. I'd have loved to handcuff him in this draft
1.28 - Jets select Devin Singletary, RB, BUF, B+, I like the situation, Gore and McCoy are aging and both should be close to final season. Singletary is a good RB who should be able to make a decent living should he grab the RB1 in Buffalo. B talent goes to a prime location going forward
1.29 - Steelers get Quinnen Williams, DT, NYJ, B-, - I've a feeling Williams will be a better NFL player than fantasy one and he's a touch high here in the first. My number 3/4 DT for fantasy purposes..hence the b-
1.30 - Rams select Juan Thornhill, S, KCC - B+, Super athletic safety who's a coverage beast, should start for Kansas in short order and maybe a very good corner down the line. Touch high for me if he does move to corner. I'm not sure he's a great tackle accumulator at the next level
1.31 - Washington takes Riley Ridley, WR, CHI - B-, I've just taken him about 20 places further down in another 32 teamer, he's a bit of a polarising prospect. If you're a Ridley truther then here is probably fine. Would like to see more effort on tape and the metrics are meh but if, as I hope, he can get motivated with his polished route running he could make a decent WR2 on a roster down the line.
1.32 - Washington adds Josh Allen, DE, JAX, A, - The DE designation is key, as a strongside backer his value gets hurt for me but a very high ceiling DE is a different matter. My favourite player to watch going into the draft,he should contribute heavily to your sack/FF and TFL's totals fairly quickly..Plus he gets to play on a very good Jax D
